Selective, Safe and Scalable: Biocatalytic Oxidations from Lab to Pilot Plant

On 21 September 2026, InnoSyn hosted the webinar "Selective, Safe and Scalable: Biocatalytic Oxidations Using Oxygen from Lab to Pilot Plant," presented by Dr. Martin Schürmann, Principal Scientist in Biocatalysis at InnoSyn B.V.

The session explored how biocatalytic oxidation processes using molecular oxygen can be developed from an initial laboratory concept towards practical and scalable implementation.

Biocatalytic oxidations offer an attractive combination of selectivity, sustainability and process efficiency. Enzymes can provide excellent chemo-, regio- and enantioselectivity, while molecular oxygen can serve as an atom-efficient terminal oxidant, with water as the main by-product. Working predominantly in aqueous media can also contribute to simpler and more sustainable waste streams.

The central question of the webinar was therefore not only whether a biocatalytic oxidation works, but how it can be translated into a cost-efficient and scalable process.

Martin guided participants through the development journey from initial proof-of-principle and process optimization to enzyme production and (pilot-)plant implementation. Along the way, he addressed several of the practical considerations that influence successful scale-up, including productivity, acceptable enzyme loadings and efficient product isolation.

The session also looked at the broader sustainability and efficiency of the process. Process Mass Intensity (PMI) analyses were discussed for both biocatalyst production and the biocatalytic process itself, providing a more complete view of process performance.

The webinar reflected one of the key challenges in applied biocatalysis: moving beyond a promising reaction towards a process that can perform effectively at larger scale.

We would like to thank Dr. Martin Schürmann for sharing his expertise and everyone who joined us for the session.
